In today's
society of immediate gratification, the pleasure and satisfaction of creating
something by hand is being lost. In an effort to change this and provide
special children with a caring gift, a public service announcement was
aired asking people to donate their no longer in use sewing machines to
Girls Inc. The sewing machines were ether delivered to Girl's Inc. or a
Time Warner Cable Technician picked up the machine. These machines were
checked, cleaned, and prepared for use by a community volunteer. In less
than two weeks time, our generous community donated a total of fourteen
useable machines.
Then on Thursday afternoons, Wendy Fetridge from Berkshire Television taught
sewing classes to Girl's Inc.'s preteen students. Their first project was
a patchwork quilt. Each class member designed their own block that was
sewn together and donated to the Elizabeth Freeman Center for use by children
served in their programs. Time Warner Cable paid for the necessary fabric
and supplies, with Jo-Ann Fabrics providing a discount and helping with
the coordination of fabric selection. Fran Markham, general manager of
Time Warner Cable and Susan Lampshire
were on hand to help with the turning and tying down of the quilt. The
quilt was made by Emily Nowell, Ashley Konton,Lindsay Avery, Emily Pink,
Cara Adornetto, Ashley Betz, Casey Blasidi, Lea Sharron, Nicki Martin,
Kya Mindermann, Daleieh Stroud, Candiese Williams and will be on display
for two weeks before
it is delivered to the shelter. At which time the girls involved will be
given an opportunity to understand more about the plight of abused children.
A traditional skill was combined with community service to provide a unique
and important experience for the students involved. If YOU would be interested
in coordinating or supporting future sewing projects please contact
